“Distressed partners no longer see each other as their emotional safe haven. Our lover is supposed to be the one person we can count on who will always respond. Instead, unhappy partners feel emotionally deprived, rejected, even abandoned. In that light, couples’ conflicts assume their true meaning: they are frightened protests against eroding connection and a demand for emotional reengagement.” - Sue Johnson
Across countries, cultures and religions, marriage is perceived as the ultimate “coming together”: a bonding act of sanctity and bliss. While the beginning of a marriage may be sweet, however, friction can arise from living with a loved one in close proximity… especially in the long term. Issues such as infidelity, conflicts of high intensity, endless trivial battles and other regrettable events can also seriously hurt marriages, to a point where divorce seems to be the only viable option. This is where “marriage intensive”, a type of couple’s therapy, comes in.
Marriage intensive can be described as some sort of therapy marathon. While typical therapy sessions last no longer than 75 minutes, a marriage intensive session at The Relationship Room comes in three options: half day, 1-day and 2-day.
The purpose of marriage intensive is to dig deep into the relationship (dynamics, details and all), unearthing pain that may have been ignored and buried. During the intensive, the therapist reflects back to the couple in a compassionate manner, enabling them to learn and find solutions to existing issues together. The goal of the intensive is to help couples to get to the root of the issue faster and to break any dysfunctional international pattern and create a new positive pattern of communication.
The number of sessions required will depend on a number of factors such as the complexity of the issue and also the motivation of each partner in the relationship. However, with marriage intensive, the therapeutic journey will take a shorter time as compared to regular weekly sessions and couples are able to have a much deeper conversations.
Like other types of relationships, marriages aren’t easy to maintain. Couples may turn to marriage intensive when their marriage needs a significant amount of work: for example, constant fights that go nowhere, betrayal and infidelity, or a lack of communication altogether.
For situations which require more urgency, marriage intensive could be the best choice, providing much-needed breathing room for positive change to occur. In more extreme cases - whereby a marriage is at risk of dissolving any time - marriage intensive can kickstart a series of hard but necessary conversations.
Marriage intensive is a compelling option, particularly in specific situations where traditional therapy may fall short. This intensive approach is tailored to address deeply entrenched challenges and provide focused support for couples facing issues such as the following:
